Have you ever been here…
It’s 6 o’clock and the staff has all gone home. You’re at your half covered desk. Its been another long day.
You’ve taken too many sales calls, announcing “A ONE OF A KIND INNOVATIVE SOLUTION” to your marketing needs.
You’ve just skimmed over the last of 10 daily emails , extending an invite to learn about new guaranteed ways to achieve success…all while you’re enjoying a round of golf, or laying on a warm sun-drenched beach, sucking down a Margarita or your drink of choice.
Ok… I’m being sarcastic. Let’s continue.
I’m guessing your smart.
You’ve figured out by now that the old way of doing business is a bust. (For most companies) You’ve tried to get a handle on the crazy pace of change including new technology. You no doubt have a keen ear out for the latest news about this thing we call business.
In the back of your mind as you contemplate calling it a day, is the latest marketing buzz. You think to yourself, I must find a way to develop a marketing strategy that rocks.
You hear everywhere, that you have to engage and connect with customers.
You hear, that Content Marketing is the new path to success.
You hear, that Mobile is hot but think…How does this expand my business ?
Social Media… Search … Let’s throw you another curveball…Native Advertising.
And then there’s the million dollar (always present) question on everything you do. What’s my ROI ?
Frequently it just leaves you feeling overwhelmed, wondering what’s the best plan of action…What is really that critical thing that will help my business flourish tomorrow.
If you’re spending a great deal of time, trying to keep up with every new tactic, technology, and social network, then maybe it’s time for some new thinking and a new strategy.
That’s what this post is about.
It’s about having a new business marketing strategy that reflects the reality of a changed world; a strategy that goes beyond the latest and greatest in technology.
But first here’s a small piece of that reality that many businesses face.
Recently, I had a conversation with a friend, a successful entrepreneur from Boston. Mike is in the business of deal-making -The buying and selling of multi-million dollar businesses.
One comment he made during our conversation resonated. “Many of my business associates tell me , that they “do not having a clue”, when it comes to digital marketing, social marketing or on-line video.”
Are you one of those business people?
My friend Mike knows that the marketing world is unfamiliar and more perplexing. He also knows that executing a marketing strategy – what action you should take to make audiences want to pay attention versus tune out, is a challenge more daunting than ever.
DIGITAL MARKETING IS MISUNDERSTOOD BY TOO MANY BUSINESSES
If you’re just a bit weary of all the marketing hype and yes…a marketing world turned upside down, you’re not alone.
The digital landscape is mind boggling to many ! Quite frankly, it is also misunderstood by far too many businesses.
The game has changed. Technology is not the only answer, it is part of it. Some dots need to be connected. We call connecting those dots SMART STRATEGY.
The late Steve Jobs had this to say about connecting Dots:
“A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.” — Steve Jobs via Content Marketing Institute
Jobs pointed out a significant problem within the digital marketing discipline and one that leads to disappointing results for many businesses.
The digital revolution has resulted in a proliferation of businesses offering services that do not deliver long-term value to their customers.
Anybody can proclaim themselves as “Experts” or “Thought Leaders” in the field of Social Media, Content Marketing, or On-Line Video, but the reality is their limited perspectives and expertise, can not begin to address the vast scope of changes occurring in business today. Most of them do not even attempt to connect the dots that Steve Jobs mentions in the quote above.
KEEP IT SIMPLE…PLEASE !
Back to my Boston Friend Mike- His words – “Keep it simple.”
Yes…Consumers and customers of all kinds are confused by the vast amount and unending supply of information.
Too often digital service providers are complicating marketing and communications. On one hand we evangelize the critical importance of being social and human connection, but cloud and confuse minds with redundant, over-technical, and boring monologue.
SEPARATING THE HYPE & BUZZ FROM A RESULTS DRIVEN MARKETING STRATEGY
It starts by trying to simplify all the technical jargon and BS., by doing a quick review of the big picture.
The New Era Of Marketing Is About Connection, Trust & Culture. It’s About Real People Not Transactions.
1. Your ability to generate awareness, capture attention, engage a customer and ultimately influence behavior will determine your long term business success.
2. Connecting with your audience on a deeper emotional level is more critical than ever before. It’s about touching hearts in addition to reaching minds.
3. Storytelling along with video are two robust tools available to engage customers and deliver an emotional connection.
The critical thing you need to attract, engage and retain customers is a strategy centered on your customers.
Adopting a Customer-Centric strategy requires a bold re-thinking of your business and more specifically how you value customers and employees.
It requires a journey of business transformation that revolves around ‘The Experience.’
To truly produce superior business results, that strategy begins with, understanding the heart and soul of your business.
Having quality products and services is now a starting point in business. To inspire people today you have to deliver MEANING NOT MARKETING through INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED EXPERIENCES that are personal and memorable.
Let me leave you with this final thought.
There’s a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for YOU and YOUR business if you’re wyilling to be a little maverick-like in developing your business strategy.
It’s Time To Connect Some Dots !
The choice is yours.
Branding today is about creating fans and advocates, by making a personal connection with your customers and yes your employees.
The opportunity to differentiate through an experience perspective is now. Those that come late to the game will be at a competitive disadvantage.
The choice is yours.
